The University of Caen Normandy was founded in 1432 by John of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Bedford. It was then the third English university, after Oxford and Cambridge.
During the Battle of Normandy, in July 1944, the university and its library were entirely destroyed. The reconstruction project was supervised by Rector Pierre Daure and assigned to architects Édouard Hur and Henry Bernard. The cornerstone of the new university was laid in 1948.
Inauguration of the new campus took place on June 1-2, 1957, in the presence of the international community. It became a listed historical monument in 2012. For more information on the history of our campus (in French).
